What A Day

Well, today was a big big day for me at Delta College. Today was basically a skills/math competency day. This is the last week of NUR 101A and we were tested on different skills of nursing and also we had a math test first thing this morning, which contained questions involving dosages, and how much of a certain medication do you give someone or at what time would you give a medication when given other information to help solve the problems. I feel i did well on the math. The skills competency was divided into 4 stations.

Station 1: Inserting a Urinary Catheter, answering questions about positioning patients, and questions about urinalysis

Station 2: IM injections and Sub-Q injections, answering questions on IV complications, etc

Station 3: Simple Sterile Dressing Change, Ostomy Care, etc.

Station 4: Head-to-toe assessment on Tim Sim (a simulated manakin that has pusle, respirations, blood pressure, bowel sounds and lung sounds.

So what happened was, you draw a number, either 1, 2, or 3 and you do that station. And then all of us had to do station 4, the assessment. After a long long day, and having butterflies in my stomach while i waited for like 4 hours, I ended up passing both stations, station 1 and station 4. So i am soo very glad this day is over. Now i’ve got two days to review for the Final comprehensive final on the theory and book work. Over all, i’m thinking i’m going to end up with a grade in the higher 80s (B+) or low 90s (A-). Either way works for me.

Starting this Friday, I’m on vacation!!! I get a whole week off from school and I’m going to cherish every second of it. Because after this spring break is over, I’m heading to the VA hospital in Saginaw and i’m going to be working hard, but hopefully it will be an enjoyable experience that will allow me to learn a lot. We will be developing Nursing Care Plans for patients, which means we first have to do assessments on patients and then spend many hours figuring out; a diagnosis, a plan, implementation of that plan, and an evaluation/outcome of what was done and how it was effective. So all that is scaring me a bit but hopefully i will be able to get through it. That’s all i have to say for now.
